Kenya RN to Saskatchewan 2026: Skip NNAS Through Employer Sponsorship

Saskatchewan is currently the only province where you can legally start working as a nurse without first completing the full NNAS (National Nursing Assessment Service) advisory report. The College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) accepts direct applications from internationally educated nurses, and several Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) employers will sponsor you through the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) Health Sector pathway with no LMIA required. Wages sit at roughly CAD 42.27 per hour for an entry RN under the SUN collective agreement, which is about KES 4,000 per hour at April 2026 rates.

This post is for Kenya nurses moving to Regina or Saskatoon who want their spouse working on arrival and their kids in school by the next term. The spouse open work permit is the part most agents forget to explain properly, so we will get into it.

Why Saskatchewan and not Ontario or Alberta

Ontario and Alberta both demand a completed NNAS advisory report before the regulator will even open your file. NNAS takes 6 to 14 months for Kenya-trained applicants, mostly because the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) verification through the indexing portal stalls when your PIN was issued before the 2020 system migration. If your training was at KMTC Nairobi, Kenyatta, or Aga Khan before 2020, expect to physically visit NCK headquarters at Lenana Road to push the verification through. Email follow-ups rarely move it.

Saskatchewan removed the NNAS requirement in late 2022 and the workaround has held through 2026. CRNS reviews your transcripts and NCK licence directly. You still need IELTS Academic (CLB 7, which is 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, except 7.0 in speaking and listening). The British Council Nairobi centre on Upper Hill runs IELTS twice monthly. Mombasa applicants usually fly in for the test since the Mombasa centre has fewer dates.

The credentialing hazard nobody warns Kenya RNs about

CRNS will flag your file if your KMTC diploma was three years and you did not complete the BScN top-up. They classify the standalone diploma as "below entry-level competency" for the RN scope, and they will redirect you to the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) stream instead. LPN wages are CAD 32 per hour, not 42. If this is you, two options exist:

  1. Complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing top-up at the University of Nairobi or Kenya Methodist University before applying. This adds 18 months but preserves the RN pathway.
  2. Apply through the Saskatchewan Polytechnic IEN bridging program, which assesses you on arrival and lets you write the NCLEX-RN within 8 to 12 months. Pearson VUE delivers NCLEX-RN at their Westlands Nairobi centre, so you can actually test before you leave if you prefer.

Do not let a recruiter tell you the diploma is fine without checking your specific transcript. We have seen three KMTC graduates in 2025 land in Saskatoon and get reclassified as LPNs after signing contracts.

The family reunification math

Here is what the SINP Health pathway gives you that other provinces do not:

  1. Your spouse gets an open work permit issued at the same time as your closed work permit, valid for the same duration (usually 3 years). They can work any job, any employer, full time, from day one.
  2. Your children get free public school in Saskatchewan from kindergarten through grade 12, no international student fees, the moment you activate your work permit at the port of entry.
  3. Provincial health coverage kicks in after a 3-month waiting period for the whole family. Budget around CAD 200 per month for private bridge insurance during those three months.
  4. Permanent residence application can be filed within 6 months of starting work through SINP's nominee stream. Total time from Nairobi departure to PR card in hand is typically 14 to 20 months.

Costs to budget in KES first: NCK verification and certified transcripts run about KES 18,000. IELTS is KES 33,250. CRNS application fee is CAD 600 (roughly KES 57,000). Flights for a family of four from Nairobi to Saskatoon via Doha or Amsterdam run KES 480,000 to 620,000 depending on season. First month settlement in Saskatoon needs CAD 5,000 minimum.

Do not start the CRNS application before you have your NCK licence verification letter in hand and your IELTS booked. Doing it out of order wastes the application fee because CRNS will close incomplete files after 90 days.
